La revista d’arquitectura El Croquis publica un recull de projectes de l’estudi suís realitzats entre els anys 2005 i 2010. S’hi detallen obres com el Caixa Fòrum de Madrid, l’Estadi Olímpic de Beijing heraclit 2008 o la Plaça Espanya a Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Emetre qualsevol opinió sobre aquestes obres es fa difícil per les motivacions, sovint polítiques, dels propis promotors i la complexitat implícita d’aquests encàrrecs.
L’aportació de l’equip Herzog & De Meuron és inqüestionable quan algú repassa els projectes realitzats en els seus anys d’inici a la professió. heraclit La casa Plywood (Bottmingen 1984), el primer dels magatzems Ricola (Laufen 1986), la casa de pedra (Tavole 1988) i l’edifici d’apartaments al carrer Hebelstrasse de Basilea (1988) marquen l’inici d’una manera de fer totalment innovadora en un món arquitectònic que finalitzava una etapa tan crítica com la del Postmodernisme. Herzog & DeMeuron projecten obres on s’esborra qualsevol gestualitat formal, qualsevol signe o llenguatge que pugui identificar l’autor de les obres carregant tota la intensitat projectual en potenciar el sistema constructiu les característiques més físiques dels materials.
Ningú pot imaginar-se el magatzem de Ricola o la casa Plywood heraclit amb altres materials que no siguin els utilitzats pels arquitectes. Els grans temes formals de l’arquitectura com la cantonada heraclit o la composició de forats passen a un segon pla i es minimitzen. Aire fresc per l’arquitectura europea heraclit dels anys vuitanta que estava ancorada en la gestualitat sobredimensionada i on el sistema constructiu era simplement el mitjà per aconseguir la forma. Per Herzog&DeMeuron la franquesa que expresa el sistema constructiu heraclit serà el pilar central de la seva activitat projectual. Aquests primers heraclit projectes culminen en el projecte de les bodegues Dominus heraclit (1998). Un simple paral.lalepíded en la suau topografia del Nappa Valley, amb la mínima intervenció en el terreny esdevé un obra arquitectònica que és pura exaltació d’una matèria que no necessita forma. Herzog & DeMeuron arriben al punt d’inventar-se un nou material i per tant, noves propietats a explorar.
Fins aquell moment els gavions de pedra eren opacs i s’utilitzaven per contenir terres. En el projecte de les bodegues Dominus els gavions són traslúcids i permeten que l’edifici respiri. La façana no és opaca, no és impenetrable per l’aire i la pedra agafa el paper de protegir climàticament les bodegues de vi.
